Radiation Damage & Tissue Healing
Radiation therapy can reduce blood flow and oxygen supply to healthy tissue, sometimes causing long-term pain, fibrosis,wounds and inflammation. HBOT increases oxygen delivery deep into damaged areas, which may stimulate new blood vessel growth, collagen production and tissue repair.
Studies in breast cancer patients found significant improvements in pain, swelling, skin problems and arm mobility after HBOT treatment. One study reported that 81% of patients experienced meaningful pain
improvement after HBOT therapy.
Supporting Radiation Side Effects
HBOT has been investigated for chronic radiation-related complications including:
- Radiation cystitis (bladder inflammation)
- Radiation proctitis (bowel inflammation)
- Soft tissue necrosis and poor wound healing
- Fibrosis and chronic pain
- Osteoradionecrosis
(bone damage after radiation)
Recent clinical reviews suggest HBOT may help improve symptoms and healing in several of these conditions, particularly when conventional treatments have not been successful.
A Growing Area of Integrative Care
HBOT is increasingly being explored as part of supportive and integrative cancer care, particularly for patients recovering from radiation therapy, surgery and long-term tissue damage. By increasing oxygen delivery to compromised tissue, HBOT may help support healing, circulation and cellular repair.
A growing body of research has shown promising improvements in pain reduction, wound healing and overall quality of life in patients experiencing radiation-related complications. Many oncology and wound care centres worldwide now incorporate HBOT as part of comprehensive recovery programmes for selected patients.
